How often change carbon brush for High Speed

We have Dewalt High Speed buffer. Lately it has been loosing some "juice". Someone told me that our "carbon brush" has worn out and that I should replace it. It's these two carbons on spring on either side of the buffer. How often do that need to be replaced? And when do you know that it's time to replace?

Depends on how much use they get, could be once every 3 months, 6 months or once a year. They aren't expensive, so you should have some on hand, and if you think they need to be changed, change them. The buffers also need to be cleaned, take it apart and blow it out with compressed air, you will get build-up of polish and wool or foam on the inside which can interfere with the brushes. Also check you chord, if you are losing power it may be a loose or damaged wire or connection or a plug going bad.

Great. So I should keep some spares on hand. I never knew that. We almost threw away the buffer thinking it was broke. But one of our worker who had construction experience checked out the DeWalt buffer and thought maybe carbon brush need to be replaced. Sure enough it was all wore out. So maybe that's why it didn't work.

I called Sonny but they needed part number. It took a while to track down the part number and we ordered 10 carbon brushes to have some back up for future.

Lesson learned.
