5 replies created over 2 years ago

We have full service with detail shop. We keep 4 detail guys during weekdays and have 8 on weekend. I have detail manager who more or less detail during the weekdays and do more of quality control and labor management during the weekends.

what is the fair going rate for such detail manager? Is there anyone who uses some sort of commission system? If so, how does it work?

Thanks.

Commissions mainy work if they're either selling add-on services or working to bring in business. If they're just waiting for the work to show up, it would be pointless to pay them a portion of the profit for what they're already being paid to do.

First a few questions:

Is your detail manager on salary or hourly? Guaranteed minimum per month?
How much more does the manager make on average, compared with your best detail tech?
How many hours does your manager work a week?
What are his responsibilities?
How much authority does he/she have? (Hire & fire, purchasing, scheduling)
How much customer contact?
Responsible for any staff training?
Who sells the detailing services?

These are "need to know" things that determine employee value, especially for a manager.

$10/hour plus incentives

No less than $30,000 a year plus a daily bonus of X dollars if he sells a certain dollar amount for the day.

Set manhours to perform each detail service. Then tally each day the number of manhours of work thru the shop. If the paid hours of labor exceed he work hours he looses a day of bonus made from sales.

This way you will get greater sales and make the manager financially responsible for keeping labor within certain guidelines.
