Alochol Testing

Starting a testing program towmorrow. I've had enough. It will be regular and random and penalties involve dimissal for the day, suspensions - each longer than the other, reduction in hourly wages to minimum for 1-3 weeks depending on the number of offenses and finally, outright termination.

I've caught them before with alcohol on their breath and even drinking beer out of fast food cups. I've penalized them at the time, and our manual expressly forbids being drunk or consuming it at work.

But enough is enough. There is a new sheriff in town!

Sounds like you need to make some examples out of some of your employees. You need to have a "0" tolerance policy. To protect yourself especially.

I know you are frustrated. But one of the problems of exterior washing is that you do not have a lot of employees so you depend heavily on those you have.

We would all like to clean house in these situations but generally this is not practical.

We situations like this happen to us we just start recruiting and looking for replacements and change as quickly as possible, while hoping the existing “will see the light” and straighten up. All too often their personal problems overwhelm them and they do not know how to handle it. You can help some of them but not all of them.

How can ensuring a safe work environment not be practical?

Don't ask don't tell may work for gays in the military but allowing intoxicated employees on your premises just because you're too lazy to lay down the law and enforce it is ridiculous.

Cheifs - I did not make myself clear.

I was suggesting doing everthing you did plus start recruiting replacements.

My experience is that this type of employee will fall off the wagon again soon. I want to start training a replacement asap.
