Premium Sealant (LustraShield, Rain X, Body Shield...ECT.), Bug Remover, High Pressure Soap, Foaming Polish or 3X Foaming Polish, Dryer function
Thanks Homer,
Do you have these option at your car wash, if you do which one is the customers' favourite. I was thinking about 3x foaming conditioner or Dryer,if you do have one of these tell me which brand is the best one.
Thanks
After 17 years, I'm no longer in SS but I'll list some of the things I did that had impact, in order of importance:
#1 Adding unlimited time (50% increase in revenue), $2/5 min or $4/20 min)Dixmor loops and timers. No more running after change when their time was running out.
#2 Triple foam protectant...3 changing colors/scents...don't know the % but this quickly became my most popular service. It was remarkable.
#3 Credit card to token changer...bonus tokens with each transaction... 4% of my income came from this machine alone.
#4 Free rug beater...created great customer loyality
I tried a lot of other things but these where the best.
I don't own a car wash, I sell chemicals. I am not a big fan of the dryer (at least the in bay ones)Most people I know who have them don't realy think they are that great. I think the biggest profit gfainer is the 3X foam, it takes a good amount of time to cover the entire car/truck, then even more time to rinse it off. Thats what you have to remember in a self serve, you are selling time.
Thanks Guys,
I will go for 3x foamer, only thing left is which manufactuer, air-logic's tripple foamer or Etowah Valley Equipment with three color at the same time or any other one. please advise me which one you have good expereince,

Jim: this is very interesting concept, could you elaborate a bit. We presently are set at $1.50 for 3 three and half minutes. This idea could maske us stand out in the area :) The $4,00 for 20 minutes sounds a bit over board but interesting .
How would you go about it, I have Dixmore timers .
6 SS bays no Automatics. thanks
Allen, personally I think SS pricing has hit a wall. Especially if they have to deal with express washes in the area. Why spend 5-8 bucks to wash when I can wash & vac for as little as 3.00? The best resource for unlimited time would be in past issues of Self Serve Car Wash News. Bob Clements of Wonder Wash in Wisconsin came up with this idea ten years plus ago. Site revenues at some of his places doubled IIRC.
At the SECWA roadshow in Savannah, Ga there is going to be a visit to a site that is implementing a new concept in SS washing. It will be a one price gated entry SS site. Customer pays at the gate ($5) and washes/vac all they want. Imagine if you offered free fragrance and shampoo! It brings the value back in line with express washes. Imagine all these old six-eight bay washes that could be revitalized. This will be a concept to watch.
Thanks Greg. What interests me is the idea of actually being able to lower my price with out lowering the conceptual value. We are a very low over head wash as we have no loan. But I dont want to go down the road of just becomeing the cheap place :)
If raising our price to say $2.00 and extending the time to say 5 minutes we could attract new business with out loosing customers to a price increase ???? that would be exciting for me.
I dont think the 20 minute deal would work at our wash but the 5 minute sure would bring in more pick ups full of mud hehe.
Do you think raising the price from 6 quarters to start for 3 minutes to 8 quarters to start for 5 or 6 minutes would be popular. Pros and cons would help me think this out.
As for the gated wash. We dont want to manage full time :( Also I think it would be a night mare to manage but who am I too play expert :) Thanks
I think "lower startup may be better" Anecdotally, it seems to me my best years in the SS business was when it was more affordable for the customer. Back in the mid nineties I was 1.50 for four minutes and the SS washes were humping along. After most operators in the area went to 2.00 is when we heard customers grumbling a little and revenues tapered off. I must admit I do not practice low startup price at my wash. I am $2.00/3:30. Dave Dugoff, owner of one of the highest grossing SS/IBAs in the country, believes in both a one dollar startup and dispensing a dollar token. He says the $1.00 startup by dropping one token in "just feels right" to the customer. His numbers are quite impressive, they rival a successful express wash. Anyway, this is really working for him, but I believe other factors are at play. I am thinking of lowering the price and attempting to add value, but I just added credit cards and the lower startup price complicates things a bit.
The gated wash concept does not necessarily need to be attended.
BTW, look at the trend for QSRs. Food is getting cheaper. $5 footlongs have been a huge boom for Subway. The dollar menu is back. People are looking for a deal.
